Baking: Preheat your oven to 400°F. Brush your grouper filets with melted butter or olive oil. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne. Arrange your filets on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes for every inch of thickness.
Grilling: Preheat your grill to 425°F. Marinate your grouper filets with a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Grill the fish while uncovered for 3 to 4 minutes per side.
Pan-frying: Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Pat your grouper filets with a paper towel to dry the surface. Dust the filets with flour and shake to remove the excess. Season with salt and pepper. Place the filets in the pan and cook for 3 to 4 minutes without moving them. Flip and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes.
While the flavor of fresh gulf grouper is mild, it is still quite distinct from other seafood options. Many agree that this flavor tastes like a blend between bass and halibut. The texture of grouper is more like lobster or crab, as it consists of large chunks rather than small flakes. Grouper also has some sweetness and is able to absorb many different dressings and marinades to create a fantastic and complex flavor experience.
Anyone concerned about their health will be happy to know that fresh gulf grouper is not only high in protein but also low in sodium. Like many other healthy seafood options, fresh gulf grouper also contains a mix of nutrients that includes vitamin D, iron, magnesium, and several B vitamins.
